A Sunny October Day For Sanding

The weather was beautiful today – sunny and warm.  Usually I would go painting or sketching outside on a day like this, such a gift for a day in late October.   But instead I sanded a carving I had just finished, a Wood Duck in green Canadian soapstone.  The grain is beautiful on this piece – sometimes you get fortunate with stone.  This photo is after the first coat of oil, but doesn’t really show the colours clearly yet.  I will be adding coats of oil for the next few weeks, to develop that lovely hand-rubbed patina.
